THE PEPE FAMILY

The Pepe family is an ancient one in Irpinia, which has for generations been dedicated to the production of wines, marketed throughout Italy and internationally.

Entrepreneur Angelo Pepe, following his intuition and driven by a love for his land, worked hard to write the next chapter in the family’s history. The result was Tenuta Cavalier Pepe, a cellar, winery, restaurant and bed and breakfast that has become a centre for wine production and tourism of the highest quality.

Angelo Pepe’s foresight was rewarded in 1998 when then Italian President, Oscar Luigi Scalfaro, appointed him a “Knight of the Republic” for the value of his work. The CavalierPepe’s eldest daughter, Milena, is a graduate of viticulture and oenology in France and marketing in Belgium. Today, she leads the family estate with charisma and expertise, ensuring that the wines meet the highest standards.

Tenuta Cavalier Pepe aims to produce wines that best express the unique typicity of the Irpinia region. These unique and recognisable tasting characteristics allow for numerous food and wine pairings.

Our wine tours and events include a visit to the vineyards and the winery and tastings guided with care and professionalism. Visitors interested in gastronomy can enjoy wine pairings with typical local products and, on request, a lunch at La Collina, the estate’s restaurant.

NESTOR

GRECO DI TUFO DOCG

Grape variety: 100 % Greco.

Production area: Vineyards located in the hills of Santa Paolina, Montefusco and Prata di Principato Ultra in the heart of the Greco di Tufo DOCG area.

Altitude: 400-700 metres above sea level

Soil type: Primarily tufaceous soil and clay with limestone and volcanic elements.

Vinification
Hand-picked grapes are selected in the cellar and are pressed whole. Cold settling is followed by alcoholic fermentation at low temperatures, to preserve the fruity aromas of the grape. After fermentation, the wine is aged on its fine lees before further bottle ageing.

Tasting note
Colour: rystalline, intense yellow with golden reflections.
Aroma: Complex aromas of ripe fruits like peach, pear and apple, citrus notes.
Taste: Rich and juicy with perfectly balanced acidity, minerality and a long and persistent finish.

Food pairing
Well-suited to appetisers, meat and fish dishes. The wine pairs particularly well with vegetable dishes, pasta and beans, white meats and cheeses without too much seasoning. Best served at a temperature of 10-12°C.

TERRA DEL VARO

IRPINIA AGLIANICO DOC

Grape varieties
85% Aglianico, 15% Merlot

Production area
Hillside vineyards in the municipalities of Luogosano, Sant’ Angelo all’Esca and Taurasi.

Altitude
350 metres above sea level

Soil type
Limestone clay with volcanic elements

Vinification
The grapes are picked by hand, with selection taking place first in the vineyard and then in the cellar. After de-stemming, there is a pre-fermentation cold maceration, followed by alcoholic fermentation at a controlled temperature with maceration on the skins for about ten days. The wine is aged for 24 months in concrete tanks with a further six months’ ageing in bottle before release.

Tasting note
Colour: Intense ruby red.
Aroma: Cherry and blackberry aromas with hints of black pepper and bitter cocoa, upon a pleasant background of sweet spices.
Taste: Soft, with elegant tannins and a lingering finish recalling fruits of the forest, cherry and spicy notes.

Food pairing
Particularly well-suited to appetisers of cold mates and cheeses, pasta with sauce, roast meat dishes and pizza with rich sauces and flavours. Best served at a temperature of 16-18°C.

LILA

IRPINIA FALANGHINA DOC

Grape variety
100% Falanghina

Production area
Estate-owned vineyards in the hills of the municipality of Luogosano and Sant’Angelo all’Esca, located within the Irpinia Falanghina DOC production area.

Soil type
Deep clay and sand with good organic and volcanic elements

Vinification
Grapes are hand-picked and immediately transported to the cellar, where they are selected and pressed whole. Cold settling is followed by alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel. The wine is aged on its fine lees, followed by further ageing in bottle.

Tasting note
Colour: Crystalline, straw yellow.
Aroma: Intense nose with notes of fruit including pineapple, banana, apple and pear on a light background of white flowers.
Taste: Immediately impactful in the mouth with good acidity, fresh and tasty with a delicious aftertaste recalling green apple and banana.

Food pairing
This is a Falanghina of great charm, elegance and persistence. “Lila” pairs well with a range of dishes including appetisers, surf and turf, fresh cheeses, lightly fried dishes, salads, white meats and spicy food. Best served at a temperature of 10-12°C.
