A wine rating is a score assigned by one or more wine critics to a wine tasted as a summary of that critic's evaluation of that wine. A wine rating is therefore a subjective quality score, typically of a numerical nature, given to a specific bottle of wine.
"This is a cracking Barbera, modern in style with elegant black fruit and chocolate aromatics. Very rich, opulent and concentrated palate; powerful but not overwhelming, with enough acidity to balance the fruit and well-integrated oak. Spicy, lingering finish. Delicious stuff!" – Decanter World Wine Awards (January 2019)

"A mix of pure cherry and cigar humidor aromas lead off, with the cherry theme continuing, supported by rosemary, iron and tar flavors. Big, burly tannins line the finish and should carry this wine for another few decades. Best from 2023 through 2040. 900 cases made."

The 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Bugialla is another stellar wine in this range from Poggerino. Freshly cut flowers and sweet, red berry fruit give the 2017 a surprising amount of freshness. Medium in body, with terrific energy and plenty of verve, the 2017 Riserva is positively stellar. Rose petal, blood orange and spice overtones linger on the racy, exquisite finish. In a word: impressive.

The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is elegant, balanced and bright. The pretty luminosity of the wine's appearance helps to underline this positive impression. The bouquet is nuanced and layered with dried fruit aromas that segue to spice, tar and balsam herb. You get sassy aromas of licorice, tar and cola on the close.

This opens with aromas of iris, black-skinned berry, truffle and leather. Made with 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo, the juicy, balanced palate delivers fleshy black cherry, black pepper, pipe tobacco and a touch of balsamic herb alongside polished tannins. Enjoy through 2027. KERIN O’KEEFE

Full bright yellow. Apricot, butter and yellow flowers on the nose, accented by fresh citrus nuances. Offers very good flavor intensity without excess weight; lively acidity nicely frames the stone fruit flavors. Finishes with outstanding texture and length and repeating yellow flower nuances. This estate makes a number of excellent Moscato d’Asti wines, but unfortunately I didn’t get to try them all this year.

Intense aromas of crushed mint take center stage along with more subtle scents of black-skinned berry, leather and exotic spice. The minty note carries over to the firm, full-bodied but linear palate, along with black cherry and licorice tones. Firm acidity and tight, close-grained tannins provide the backbone. Don't even attempt this before 2025. KERIN O’KEEFE

Lurid purple. Dark berries, vanilla and a hint of peppery spices on the nose and palate. In a plush, round style, showing good heft and a touch of jamminess on the back half. The vanilla note comes back strong on a smooth, warm finish that betrays just a hint of supple tannins.

The 2019 Muri Gries Kretzer is a varietal Lagrein Rosato, and it’s stunning, showing a mix of ripe apple and melon, with a spritz of yellow citrus and smoky florals, gaining richness with time in the glass. On the palate, silky textures are laced with a mix of sweet cherry and spice, with cooling minerals and a buzz of brisk acidity. It finishes with a twang of spicy red berries, yet it’s still sweet and soothing to the senses. So fresh, so tactile, and simply a joy to taste. 91 points
The 2019 Cirò Rosato Mabilia is understated, subtly sweet and floral with green melon, fresh pear and dusty florals. It’s luxuriously soft, seeming weighty at first, yet then lifted by nervous acids and minerals with soothing ripe orchard fruits, buzzing with residual energy and ending on a note of dried peaches. This 100% Gaglioppo Rosato from Calabria is a pleasure from start to finish.

The 2019 Greco di Tufo Nestor from Cavalier Pepe is a zesty spice-bomb of Greco fruit, showing lime-infused green apple with hints of ginger and smoky minerals, as dried floral tones amass in the glass. It floods the palate with minerals, flavors of tart green apple, and spicy citrus, as brisk acids sizzle across the senses. The finish is medium in length yet energetic, showing a sweet and sour expression, as ripe stone fruits give way to notes of green citrus.

The 2018 Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Superiore Luzzano impresses with its undeniable freshness and lifting florals. It’s spicy, even a bit peppery, and packed with minerality, as notes of ripe pear and crushed apples are ushered in over soft textural depths, with a bit of bitter citrus capping off the experiences. The Luzzano spends an extended period of time on the lees, which helps explain its exotic nature.
